No, It Doesn't Rhyme

Today was Poem in Your Pocket Day at school. It's part of National Poetry Month and it's the day when students are supposed to keep a poem in their pocket and read it to you when requested. It's no Arbor Day, but I've always kind of liked it.

And I always put a poem in my pocket as well, just in case any of them demand it of me.

Which nobody ever does. So, I figured I'd get some use out of it by sharing it with you.

The poem I had in my pocket went like this:

Roses are red
Violets are blue
My wife is pregnant

Okay, it's no "Song of Myself", but I like it.

Comments:
Thank God you're not one of those guys who insists, "We're pregnant." That always ticks me off.

Get over yourself already.

Steph,
I probably have said it on occasion. I know for a fact that I've said, "We're having a kid."

JB,
Okay.

Congratulations!

I haven't read for a couple of weeks, so your poem had a great effect. It instantly made me smile - I thought of all those personal things that I am excited about, and how if I shared them with my students at my junior high, some of them would be excited for me, and some of them would look at me with that puzzled-dog look, as if I were speaking Urdu.

Anyway, enjoy your blogging time while it lasts. Come October, your posts will change because your entire center of gravity will shift to the little one. You may have to change the subtitle reference from misery to something like "sleep-deprived giddy joy."

Congratulations! And all that.

P.S. The best parenting tool? Humor. A good sense of humor.

I probably would have walked around with "There once was a girl from Nantucket." (One of the many reasons I am not a teacher and not allowed to go anywhere near children.)

Congratulations! (And I agree with Steph on the "we're pregnant" thing.)

Roses are red;
Violets are blue.
You're already a good dad;
Just listen to you.

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Rhyming is overrated.
